Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition that affects men of all ages in Montreal.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED), sometimes called impotence, is more than just an occasional challenge—it’s a persistent inability to attain or sustain an erection sufficient for fulfilling intimate experiences.

What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

When aroused, the brain triggers chemicals that widen blood vessels to the penis while narrowing those that drain it. The corpora cavernosa—two internal chambers—fill with trapped blood, creating an erection.

If blood flow is blocked or restricted, erections weaken or fail—a leading cause of ED. Remember: ED is a medical issue, not a reflection of masculinity. Causes for ED can be psychological or biological.

Common lifestyle choices and medical conditions highly contribute to erectile dysfunction. These include obesity, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, alcohol use, etc.

The good news is that you no longer have to suffer as effective treatments exist and are readily available to you at Manova - our men's health clinic in Montreal.

What are the causes of ED?

In this episode, Dr. Kevin Zorn explains some of the possible causes of Erectile Dysfuntion, as well as the most commonly used methods to treat it.

Don't let ED impact your sexual life. Multiple techniques and methods in modern medicine allow us to treat ED and help you regain your confidence.

Although pills are the first line of treatment, other methods such as penile implant surgery are better options for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in some men. Penile constriction bands, the use of vacuum erection devices, penile injections or focused shock therapy are also options.

In the end, it all comes down to the option that best fits your personal lifestyle and your needs.

Risk Factors

Erectile dysfunction is a common condition among older men. Aging is a key component in developing ED.

  • Men's testosterone levels naturally decline at a rate of 1% a year, starting in a man's thirties.

  • High cholesterol and the buildup of arterial plaque over time causes blood vessels to narrow, lessening the capability of your circulatory system.

Lifestyle choices and health conditions can also contribute to erectile dysfunction:

  • Obesity

  • Smoking

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Sedentary life style

  • Chronic alcohol/substance abuse

  • Certain medications (including some antidepressants and blood pressure drugs)

  • Psychological factors (stress, anxiety, depression)

What are the symptoms of erectile dysfunction?

The common signs of erectile dysfunction are related to the inability to achieve and maintain an erection

Erections are less hard or unatainable

Difficulty getting an erection or lowered hardness

Longer to get an erection

Time to get an erection is longer or requires longer stimulation

Inability to maintain an erection

Erections are attainable but quickly lost

What are my Treatment Options for ED?

1

Oral (pill) medication

The most common treatment for ED involves the use of PDES inhibitors to increase blood flow to the penis.

2

Injection Therapy (PShot)

The "Priapus Shot" or P-Shot is a procedure that uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to potentially improve erectile function.

3

Use of vacuum erection devices

These devices act like a pump to increase blood flow to the penis, thereby helping men get an erection.

4

Trimex Injections

Trimex is a combination of three medications that are directly injected into the penis to produce an erection, effective for many men who don't respond to oral ED medications.

5

Shockwave Therapy

A non-invasive treatment that uses low-intensity shockwaves to improve blood flow to the penis and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels.
